Some Bacon Historical items (and some others)

The first Lement Bacon was born in Woodstock, CT but lived in Southbridge, MA and in Chelsea, VT. He died in 1872, a successful businessman in Chelsea. His sons Christopher (called C.B.) and Lement were born in Southbridge and went to Chelsea with their father and stepmother, then migrated, either together or with one following the other, to Winchester, VA; then to Mobile, AL and then to Kemper Co, MS, and then eventually to Gilmer in Upsher Co, TX. Lement died in Starrville, TX in 1861. At least he is supposed to be buried there. I also have a note that C.B. took Lement's two boys, Dana and Henry to live with him when Lement died in 1861.

The Chelsea Bank, Chelsea, VT

The caption says: "The old brick bank was built in 1826 or 27 expressly for the Bank of Orange County which had been chartered in 1822. The date is most impressive when one considers that White River ??? didn't have a bank until 1882. Building is heavily constructed with wide inside shutters to close over the windows. Bank moved from here to present location at junction of Rte 110 & Rte 113 in 1899. Man is thought to be J.B. Bacon whose family was associated with banking in the area over 100 years. Served briefly as minnliner's shop and barbershop. Rented to Allen and Underhill as print shop in 1910 and later sold to them. Brad and Tom Brownell bought in 1955 and contine printing there. Building now owned by Jim Van Dyk of Tunbridge. (Mary Lou's note: Photos and information from book The History of Chelsea by Syd Gilman)

This is a copy of a receipt that was signed by the first Lement Bacon in Vermont. It says "Received of Lorenzo W. Moore sixty three dollars in full for his note for one yoke of six years old red cattle, being in his possession two years or more. Oxford 1862"

In this carved, hinged folder are these two pictures. It was given to me by my grandmother Dora Belle Bacon and she told me they were Lement Bacon Jr (1817-1861), Edna and his living children. I assume they are Porter (who seems to disappear from the records), John Lement, Chas Henry better known as "Henry", and Dana. I assume from the ages of these children that it was taken about 1858 or 59 since the youngest child looks about 2, or maybe 3.

These two pictures are John Lement Bacon (Henry's brother) and his wife Eudora.

A letter home from Dana to his niece Bessie (Elizabeth)

In red at top my grandmother or her sister has written "Our grandfather, Lement Bacon died July 28, 1861"
